Many Constitution provisions need second look, says Odoki

Daily Monitor – Three decades later, former Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki says many provisions in the Constitution need to be given a second look because Ugandans have had 30 years of experience. The Constitution was promulgated on October 8, 1995, after it was enacted by the Constituent Assembly (CA) delegates, following close to two years of debate and deliberations. It replaced the 1967 Constitution.

New Vision – Kampala- Former Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki has urged jusicial officers to exercise a high degree of integrity to upload the rule of law and constitutionalism as Uganda commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Constitution.

Odoki said while speaking about the state of constitutionalism at the Constitutional Square in Kampala on Tuesday, October 7, 2025 insisting that this is the only way Uganda can accept majority rule while preserving minority rights in society.

Justice Odoki, who chaired the Uganda Constitutional Commission that drafted the 1995 Constitution, made the remarks on Tuesday during a commemorative tree-planting event organized by the Center for Constitutional Governance (CCG) at Constitutional Square in Kampala.
